HTML 5 and Semantic Updates

Out of curiosity, I was reading about updates to HTML5 and changes to the "font styling" tags:

<em></em>
<i></i>
<b></b>
<strong></strong>

I was reading that, as opposed to being styling elements, that they are now taking on different semantic meanings. For example, the "i" tag is now meant to convey an "alternate line of thought". Out of curiosity, how many of you have begun to factor these updates into your coding? Do these "semantic elements" still perform a styling function within the browser? Is anyone of the opinion that it would have been better to simply discontinue these tags and not confound styling and markup?
