Call an android app from web browser and get a response

There are a number of other posts related to this question but no satisfactory answers.

I've developed a webapplication which (obviously) runs in the browser. From the browser, I'd like to call an app on the device which reads a fingerprint and returns a result to the browser.

Is this possible? In general, is there a way to make a call from the browser to an android app (ajax?) and get a response object (in json)?
